Generally speaking, roads from Bangkok to Trat are in an acceptable condition. If you want to rent a car and drive it yourself, be my guest! However, after travelling on a plane approximately 10 hours or more, hardly slept at all, there must be better ways to reach your destination than drive five hours with matches holding your eyelids.
When you are not in a hurry to arrive to your resort and you want to see a little bit of Thailand: A limousine service or a private taxi is the answer! There are plenty of companies which offer a private transport from and to Koh Chang. It depends how many of you are and how much luggage you carry which kind of car to choose.
Well, "Limousine" is a bit misleading word. Most of the time they offer you a nice Toyota Camry, which is fine if you travel by two. If you pay a bit more, you will have a more luxurious Mercedes. If you are more than two it's better to take a spacious minibus. Overall you will have four to five hours relaxing road trip ahead.
Of course choose a reliable company and you will have a trustable driver who is used to drive long distances without taking any unnecessary risks on the road. Communication in English may not be the strongest skill of your driver but probably his smile will save the day. Anyway he understands the basics when you need to stop to toilet or buy some refreshments.
Just when you will do your booking remember to ask if the ferry ticket is included to the price as well as road tolls.

I recommend Ing Taxi which is safe and a bit cheaper than limousine services. He has a spacious Toyota Innova and can take up to 4 adults or 3 adults and 2 children.
It will cost you 3500THB to bring you from Bangkok International Airport to any resort in Koh Chang. The price doesn't include the ferry tickets but each person will get inside the taxi a free small bottle of water. You can also enjoy the free onboard wifi and continue to surf the web and post your travelling pictures on your social network.
Have a safe trip!
